Suvarnaprashan Sanskar: Meaning, Vidhi and Mantra

Quick Answer

Suvarnaprashan Sanskar is the Ayurvedic tradition of giving a child purified gold (Suvarna Bhasma) with herbs and honey, by mouth. It grew from the birth rite Jatakarma, one of the 16 Hindu sanskars, in which gold, honey and ghee touch the newborn's tongue. Today families do it at home on Pushya Nakshatra: a morning bath, a clean spot, the Kashyapa Samhita mantra, and the age-wise number of drops on an empty stomach. The next Pushya Nakshatra is Sunday, 1 November 2026 (Ravi Pushya).

Suvarnaprashan Meaning

Suvarna means gold. Prashana means to feed by mouth, or to lick. Put together, Suvarnaprashan means "feeding gold". You will also see it written as Swarnaprashan, Swarna Prashana and Swarna Bindu Prashana. All four names describe the same practice. Read the full introduction in What is Suvarnaprashan?

Is Suvarnaprashan a Sanskar?

Its roots are in a sanskar. Jatakarma, the birth sanskar and one of the 16 sanskars of Hindu tradition, includes touching the newborn's tongue with gold, honey and ghee. Ayurveda's paediatric text, the Kashyapa Samhita, takes that idea further. It describes giving gold rubbed with honey and ghee as a regular practice for children, for intellect, digestion and strength.

Because of this lineage, many families and Ayurvedic clinics call it Suvarnaprashan Sanskar. In practice, it has become a monthly ritual on Pushya Nakshatra for young babies, and a daily morning routine for older children.

Suvarnaprashan Vidhi at Home

The vidhi is simple. Most families follow these steps:

  1. Choose the day: Pushya Nakshatra for the first dose, and for babies up to 3 months. Check the Pushya Nakshatra 2026 dates.
  2. Morning, empty stomach: give the drops soon after the child wakes, before milk or food.
  3. Bath and a clean spot: bathe the child, light a diya if that is your family custom, and sit the child comfortably on a parent's lap.
  4. Recite the mantra: a parent or elder recites the Suvarnaprashan shloka (below).
  5. Give the drops: place the age-wise number of drops on the tongue or on a clean spoon. Do not let the dropper touch the mouth.
  6. Wait 15 minutes: then feed milk or breakfast as usual.
Age Drops
0 to 3 months 1 drop, Pushya Nakshatra only
4 to 12 months 2 drops daily
1 to 3 years 3 drops daily
3 to 5 years 4 drops daily
5 years and above 5 drops daily

Suvarnaprashan Mantra

The mantra most families recite is the verse from the Kashyapa Samhita that describes the practice:

सुवर्णप्राशनं ह्येतन्मेधाग्निबलवर्धनम्।
आयुष्यं मङ्गलं पुण्यं वृष्यं वर्ण्यं ग्रहापहम्॥

Suvarnaprashanam hyetan medhagnibalavardhanam, ayushyam mangalam punyam vrishyam varnyam grahapaham.

In plain words, the text says Suvarnaprashan increases intellect, digestive fire and strength, and is good for long life, auspicious, and good for complexion. For the word-by-word meaning, see our Suvarnaprashan shloka guide.

When to Start Suvarnaprashan

Traditionally from birth. With Baby Satwa drops, babies from 0 to 3 months get 1 drop on Pushya Nakshatra only, and daily drops start from 4 months. Many families choose a Pushya Nakshatra to begin. The upcoming dates are 1 November (Ravi Pushya), 28 November and 25 December 2026.
